The original inspiration for this design arose from the metal off-cuts used to make another Tom Faulkner piece. Spotting a series of negative shapes scattered across a sheet of steel Tom began to experiment, piecing them together to form a cut-out table base. As the idea developed, Tom noticed that he was drawing inspiration from other sources – Matisse’s iconic “Cut-Outs”, and the stained-glass windows Matisse designed for the Rosary Chapel in Vence, a place Tom has visited several times.

As the console began to come into being, Tom was struck by the alter-esque quality of the piece, a fitting homage to its spiritual muse.
